(1)High control precision
The step angle of stepping motor is generally 1.8º for two-phase motor or 0.72º for five-phase motor, while the precision of ac servo motor depends on the precision of motor encoder. Take servo motor with a 16-bit encoder as an example. Every time the encoder receives 216=65536 pulses, the motor rotates 360º, whose pulse equivalent is 360º/65536=0.0055º, and realize the closed-loop control on the position. This fundamentally overcomes the problem on out of step of the stepping motor.
(2) Good torque-frequency characteristic
For the stepping motor, with the increase of the rotational speed, its output torque is reduced. And under higher rotational speed, its output torque will decrease rapidly. Hence, in general the rotating speed of the stepping motor is between dozens RPM or hundreds RPM. While, for servo motor, under less than the rated rotational speed (generally 2000RPM or 3000RPM), it outputs a constant torque and under the rated rational speed, it outputs a constant power.
(3) Speed corresponding characteristic
For the stepping motor, it takes about 200~400ms to accelerate from standstill to several hundred RPM, while servo motor has a good speedup performance, and usually takes a few milliseconds. Hence, servo motor can be used in the control occasion with requirement of quick start and stop.
(4) Overload capacity
The stepping motor has not overload capacity but the servo motor has a strong overload capacity.
