Tear tester Elmendorf method

Principle: Acting by gravity, the pendulum swings through an arc, tearing the specimen from a precut slit. This loss in energy indicates the force required to tear the specimen.

Standards: ASTM D1922, ASTM D1424, ASTM D689, ISO 6383, ISO 1974, GB/T16578.2-2009, GB/T 455,

ASTM D1922: Standard Test Method for Propagation Tear Resistance of Plastic Film and Thin Sheeting by Pendulum Method

ASTM D1424: Standard Test Method for Tearing Strength of Fabrics by Falling-Pendulum (Elmendorf-Type) Apparatus

ASTM D689: Standard Test Method for Internal Tearing Resistance of Paper

ISO 6383-2: Plastics-Film and sheeting-Determination of tear resistance Part 2: Elmendorf method

Description

The tear tester determinates the average force to propagate tearing through a specified length of plastic film or nonrigid sheeting after the tear has been started. It helps to rank relative tearing resistance of various plastic films and thin sheeting of comparable thickness.

Principle: Acting by gravity, the pendulum swings through an arc, tearing the specimen from a precut slit. This loss in energy indicates the force required to tear the specimen.
